Fright Night
Synopsis
You might think that Jerry Dandridge is the perfect neighbour. But before you invite him in for a nightcap, there's a few things you need to know - he prefers his drinks warm, red... and straight from the jugular! Only 17-year-old Charlie Brewster knows Jerry's bloodcurdling secret and when he can't get anybody to believe him, TV horror show host Peter Vincent becomes his only ally against the powerful bloodsucker. It's FRIGHT NIGHT, an horrific howl starring Chris Sarandon (from THE PRINCESS BRIDE) as the seductive vampire, William Ragsdale as the frantic teenager trying to save his girlfriend as well as his own neck, plus Roddy McDowall (from PLANET OF THE APES) as the "Great Vampire Killer" who's in way over his head. If you love being scared, this will be the night of your life!

Most movies from my childhood have dated badly - suprisingly, this one hasn't. Despite the painfully simple synth score and Miami Vice mid 80's fashion, this film for the most part retains its power - most likely due to the simple yet effective writing and direction by Tom Holland, outstanding casting choices (everyone from Roddy MacDowell, Chris Sarandon, William Ragsdale (Herman's Head anyone?), Amanda Bearse and of course, Stephen Geoffreys as Evil Ed) and solid fx work. Any good movie has one particular scene which stands out as the turning point in the film (eg. bringing Lindsay back in The Abyss). In Fright Night, it's when Peter Vincent (MacDowell) regains his faith after accidentally (?) killing Evil Ed - with no dialogue, MacDowell conveys so much pain/confusion/horror/fascination it's mesmerizing. In the words of Goldmember, this one's a keeper. |
