Tigerland

Synopsis

Colin Farrell (Hart’s War, Minority Report) garnered a Best Actor award from the Boston Society of Film Critics for his star-making performance in this riveting, action film from acclaimed director Joel Schumacher.

Just released from the base stockade, brash, charismatic recruit Roland Bozz (Farrell) joins a platoon of young soldiers preparing to ship out to Vietnam. Bozz’s independence and outright defiance draws fire from his own men as well as commanding officers who can’t afford conflict in the middle of a war. But when the platoon is sent to Tigerland, a hellish training ground that is the last stop before Vietnam, Bozz’s leadership and character brings his men together – triggering extraordinary consequences.

Had a little trouble finding sub-titles but succeeded after many attempts. The film shows just how much hard training was put into the American Servicemen before shipping to Vietnam. They certainly made them tough. Mother didn't like the foul language but I was able to remind her that it was the same in my Army career.

On the good side the quality of the mostly unknown cast is excellent, Colin Farrell carries most of the movie with apparent ease and gives it a charm and spirit of his own. On the bad side the roving reporter style camera work is very hard on the eyes.

OK in parts but I think not one of Joel Schumakers best. Inconsistent themes and mixed performances. I wonder when the Americans are going to get over their fixation with Vietnam? We all know it was a war no one wanted, and did horrible things to the nations youth. There are plenty of other offerings that tell this message in a better way (Apocalypse Now, Full Metal Jacket etc etc). And in relation to rebellion against the system, Tigerland did it OK but not as good as Buffalo Soldiers.

Good acting. Realistic portrayal of characters. Makes one wonder why America needs to fight outsiders when they have so much hate built into the society already. Rather disappointing when the movie ended with the platoon shipping out to Vietnam. The whole movie was based on the training without an opportunity to see if the lessons learnt and camaraderie established through 'hard training' were realised in action.

A very ugly story about the harsh side of the military! No hero stuff. While the movie was made well enough it was hard to enjoy with the excessive swearing.

In the mould of Platoon. Well acted, action packed and the special effects are very good. A very in your face story of training received by the American Infantry just before they would ship out to Vietnam.
