40 Days And 40 Nights
Synopsis
One man is about to do the unthinkable. No sex. Whatsoever. For... 40 Days and 40 Nights.
To get over his last serious girlfriend, Matt Sullivan (Josh Hartnett) turned to sex - lots of it. But Matt realised that he needed to go further - to go where no man has gone before. No sex. Whatsoever. For 40 days. That's tough at the best of times, but for Matt it seems impossible: he's just met the woman of his dreams (Shannyn Sossamon) and bets are out that he won't make it. Will he hold on? Will she hold out? Find out in 40 Days And 40 Nights, directed by Michael (Heathers) Lehmann.

Definate late teen movie - aahhh, he's in love but can't do anything about it. Very predictable, but nice all the same. Good for a movie you don't have to think about. Funny in parts. |

The movie was good overall and very funny at times. It did drag on a bit towards the end though, but I would recommend this one. I give it a 6.5 out of 10. |

The premise for the film 40 Days And 40 Nights sounded like it might have enough laughs to be worth a rental. Besides I was a bit curious to see how star Josh Hartnett would be in his first comedy. It's sort of like seeing a car wreck on the side of the road, you can't help but look. It also helped that I have always liked the dark comedy Heathers, which was made by the film's director Michael Lehmann
Following a nasty break up with his longtime girlfriend Nicole, (Vinessa Shaw), Matt Sullivan (Hatnett), vows to give up sex of any kind for lent. His friends (Adam Trese and Paulo Costanzo) are so convinced that he wont be able to do it, they start betting on how soon he might crack. Things prove more difficult for Matt, when he meets Erica (Shannyn Sossamon), and is instantly taken with her.
One of the things that I really like about most movies by Michael Lehmann,is his ability to balance comedy, with a bit of bitting social commentary about our times. The script, from Robert Perez has none of that, insead going for the cheap sex joke, that we've heard many times before in better films than this. The other downer for me is Hartnett, who is miscast here, as guy under pressure. He doesn't seem to have any of that comic spark as the lead. The best perfomances in the film for me, come instead, from Sossamon and the always reliable Griffen Dunne. |
