Black Hawk Down

Synopsis

Based on actual events, Black Hawk Down is the heroic account of a group of elite U.S. soldiers sent into Mogadishu, Somalia in October 1993 as part of a U.N. peacekeeping operation. Their mission: to abduct several top lieutenants of the Somali warlord, Mohamed Farah Aidid, as part of a strategy to quell the civil war and famine that is ravaging the country.

Young Rangers and veteran Delta Force soldiers must fight side by side against overwhelming odds. For 18 harrowing hours, they remain trapped and wounded in the most hostile district of Mogadishu until a rescue convoy can be mounted to retrieve them. Outnumbered and surrounded, tensions flare, friends are lost, alliances are formed and soldiers learn the true nature of war and heroism.

Eighteen U.S. soldiers and more than 500 Somalians were killed as a result of this conflict.

Starring Australia's very own Eric Bana, Black Hawk Down is 'A 4 Star Knockout.' -Mike Clark, USA Today.

The fact that this movie was based on fact makes it even more disturbing. A bit slow to start but once the ground work is in place the movie begins to move. Unlike some US war movies, the Americans don't come out smelling like roses with all the answers for everyones problems. Remember they were there to help out the Somalis from being wiped out due to power hungry warlords. The only low point of the film is Eric Bana's role. His forced accent and dialogue is well below his usual standard.

This movie is about a rescue mission. Over confident American soldiers trying to rescue themselves from a situation they created for themselves. Then they only keep making it worse until they finally get rescued by the UN. If it wasn't for it's basis in fact it would be a great black comedy. Rated it reasonable only because it did provide some entertainment.

Well paced US army propaganda. Could have made some of the somali's a little more human and less ogre-ish. Very Ra Ra USA is the best flick, but not as much as their 1960's and 70's efforts. The Somali's were crazy, but no more that those in the USA heartlands

This is the true story of the battle of Mogadishu. The longest sustained battle involving US soldiers since Vietnam. An elite force of 120 US Delta and Ranger infantry were dropped into Mogadishu on Oct' 3rd 1993 to abduct two of Somalian Warlord Mohamed Farrah Aidid's lieutenants. Instead, two U-H 60 Black Hawk helicopters were shot down, and what was expected to take an hour lasted 15. The action resulted in the deaths of 18 US troops with a further 73 injured. Many hundreds of Somalis were killed. A gripping well put together movie that makes one wonder how any of the American troops survived.

This movie is war porn. It is one disturbing battle scene after another with very little in the way of a plot to tie it togehter. It is not a true story. It is based VERY losely on a true story. The americans got their asses whipped by the somalians and suffered relatively heavy losses, yet the only part that mentions this is right at the end in some text that flashes up breifly before the credits. And don't even get me started about Eric Bana's part in this movie.
If you like watching people and things in general blow up, you will love this. The cinmatography is excellent as would be expected with so many well known names on the production list. The music is great too, yet it still doesn't really work as a whole.
If it takes more than guns and bombs to stimulate you, then you would do well to spend those hours of your life doing something else.
