District 9

Synopsis

Thirty years ago, aliens made first contact with Earth. Humans waited for the hostile attack, or the giant advances in technology. Neither came. Instead, the aliens were refugees, the last survivors of their home world. The creatures were set up in a makeshift home in South Africa’s District 9 as the world’s nations argued over what to do with them.

Now, patience over the alien situation has run out. Control over the aliens has been contracted out to Multi-National United (MNU), a private company uninterested in the aliens’ welfare – they will receive tremendous profits if they can make the aliens’ awesome weaponry work. So far, they have failed; activation of the weaponry requires alien DNA.

The tension between the aliens and the humans comes to a head when an MNU field operative, Wikus van der Merwe (Sharlto Copley), contracts a mysterious virus that begins changing his DNA. Wikus quickly becomes the most hunted man in the world, as well as the most valuable – he is the key to unlocking the secrets of alien technology. Ostracised and friendless, there is only one place left for him to hide: District 9.

The promo's promised much more than the actual movie delivered. It was terrible!

District 9 breaks almost all the sci-fi rules and has the coolest weapons of any film. It starts with normal people in the weird situation of post apartheid South Africa. It has a documentary feel, but in the end rather than blowing things up like tom or arnold would do it is deeply, deeply humane. Brilliant thoughtful movie.

Didn't really get off on this movie - boys would like but it is definitely not a chick flick.

Interesting twist on the aliens are here genre. South African locales worked very well. Worth a watch.

I had put off seeing this film thinking that it was a "sci-fi silly". It was wonderful! This was a great satire on, not only South Africa's Apartheid, but on the plight of refugees at any time and any place. The role of the naive government official was hilarious - great dialogue. The special effects were impressive as was the acting. The cinema verite style was well-handled. I highly recommend this film.

If this had been a standard sci-fi flick it would have probably not deserved much attention. But the documentary style and unpredictable plot line set it apart. The alien spaceship hovers over Johannesburg, rather than the New York or LA (as they comment in the movie), the main character is a weedy not terribly likeable character, and the aliens are not super intelligent laser beam shooting creatures. Only the ending left me feeling somewhat unsatisfied. Maybe the film makers are just tantalising us for the release of district 10.
