The Deer Hunter

Synopsis

One of the most widely acclaimed films of all time, THE DEER HUNTER is Michael Cimino's celebrated interpretation of the stresses and dangers - both physical and emotional - which confront a trio of Pennsylvanian steel-workers when they are sent out to fight in the horror that was the Vietnam War. Out of this grim material, hewn off the macho block of men's suffering and male bonding, Cimino fashioned a huge movie that operates on the senses even more than on the mind. The film won many Oscars and immense praise, not least for MERYL STREEP's appearance as a war bride. If Vietnam could be said to have produced a Gone With The Wind, proving that courage, love and heroism are still forces in human affairs, this movie would be it.

I thought the lead actors Christopher Walken, Robert de Niro and Meryl Streep struggled through this long winded, disjointed tale superbly. I think it is without a doubt one of the worst directed films I've sat through to the end and ended lamely singing "God Bless America". Come on!! Fortunately the actors have recovered from this movie and gone on to do better things!!! Never would I see it again!!!

I used to love this movie - but after 20 odd years I watched it again and found it very slow moving, the parts where a gun was used i found pathetic, not only was the sound in the wrong tracks of the movie (so in a home cinema they came from the wrong side of the room) but they werent even the sound of the gun they were using. Too old and too outdated. It's still a good basic movie but not the classsic I used to think it was

I do not enjoy movies with lots of violence. I did not like the first part about the Yahoos and their abominable behaviour at the wedding, nor did I like the part about the Vietnam experience. Maybe it had a beneficial effect by showing how monstrous was the effect of letting Yahoos loose with sophisticated weapons of war, but I doubt it. The film was of course well produced. I remembered that it was highly praised, but did not remember what was its theme.

It is really slow to get into the story line. And the story line is not so crash hot either.

An all time classic that belongs in the history books. This film highlights the skills of Robert Deniro and Christopher Walken. It was films such as this one that displayed the diversity of some of the great actors of our time. For the younger generations who have no idea where great actors come from as there are few around today with the advent of so many special effects, films like this one are priceless. In the class of greats along with "The Shining" and "One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest".

A true classic that I had not seen until recently. I guess one can't really say any more about this movie other than what has been said so many times in the past and which is why it was one of the films that propelled De Niro to being one of the greatest actors of all time.
