Napoleon Dynamite

Synopsis

Napoleon Dynamite (Jon Heder) is a high-school outcast in every sense of the word. More interested in playing tetherball by himself and drawing pictures of his favourite animal, the "liger" (a combination of lion and tiger), Napoleon is ignored by everyone in his tiny hometown of Preston, Idaho.

At home, things aren't much better. His uber-nerd older brother Kip (Aaron Ruell) and ultra-vain Uncle Rico (Jon Gries) are too busy with their own obsessions to give Napoleon the time of day. But when Pedro (Efren Ramirez) arrives at his school, Napoleon finds friendship and performs an act of brave defiance that has him classed as a true hero.

Jared Hess' directorial debut was a sleeper hit in the US, and with a soundtrack full of 80s hits, Napoleon Dynamite deftly captures the awkwardness of adolescence and the high school years.

Overall, this was an OK movie. I can see why it attracted such a cult-type following - the acting style was very different and the main characters were outcasts. All the best teen movie stories come from outcasts, I think. Even so, the acting style simply wasn't my style - it was slow and uneventful. As was the rest of the movie. It was worth watching once so I know what all those t-shirts people are wearing around the streets is about, but I wouldn't bother with it a second time.

The stupidest thing I have ever wasted my time on. Thank god it was free, unfortunately though I can't get back these approx 90 minutes of my life.

Very disappointing after all the word-of-mouth buzz and plaudits. Instead of being interesting or challenging, pretty much all of the film relies on laughing-at rather than laughing-with the emotionally and mentally dysfunctional central character. If you want a really good comedy in which a disabled central character manages to expose the fraudulent and hypocritical world around him, rent Peter Sellers' classic "Being There". However, if your tastes run to laughing at an emotionally atrophied geek-stereotype suffering geek-stereotype teen issues, I guess you might enjoy this film. It bored me sh-tless.

Some will love it, some will hate it. It is nice to see such a clean movie. I wouldn't call it a family film, but it can be watched by people of all ages without worries. I have to say I was so intrigued by the mixed responses to this film. I personally would say it's an "OK" movie.

I love this film; I enjoyed it at the cinema and the DVD was great too!! By having a sweet-ending storyline and virtually no foul language, it rises above the average. It still had all the favourite hateable (dare I say clichéd) American schoolyard characters, however this movie skipped the f-word littered fast-track to home base that is usually served up in the the many drivelling films of this genre. The acting was terrific, especially the parts of Napoleon (Jon Heder) and Pedro (Efren Ramirez) putting in top performances.
