633 Squadron

Synopsis

Cliff Robertson plays a combat-weary pilot whose RAF squadron is ordered on an apparent suicide mission to destroy a Nazi rocket fuel plant tucked deep into a Norwegian fjord.

George Chakiris is a resistance fighter whose fate numbers among the many ironies in the expertly written screenplay (by James Clavell and Howard Koch). To make the film, which was based on a true story, a squadron of legendary Mosquito fighter-bombers was resurrected from near extinction. Dazzling flying sequences, bone-shaking sound and superb special effects help to make this one of the most realistic air combat films ever to reach the screen.

While it may not be a true story, for anyone who likes to see WWII aircraft in action, this should satisfy. The aircraft are classic, even if the film isn't quite.

This film is touted as being one of the better films of its era due largely to its special effects. The story line is no different to other historic war events but it's not a movie that I would go out of my way to see again. Whilst there is one or two well known actors, I don't think you can say that the acting efforts carried this movie. The special effects were ok but in my opinion, do not rate the write up they received when released. Overall, the movie is watchable but might I recommend the movie "Mosquito Squadron" over this title.
