A Bridge Too Far

Synopsis

In September 1944, flush with success after the Normandy Invasion, the Allies confidently launched Operation Market Garden, a wild scheme intended to put an early end to the fighting by invading Germany and smashing the Reich`s war plants. But a combination of battlefield politics, faulty intelligence, bad luck and even worse weather led to disaster beyond the Allies’ darkest fears.

One of the best war films. It's a largely accurate account of Operation Market Garden that followed the Normandy Invasion. The film had the support of the defence departments of half a dozen countries and had input from several senior officers who acted as advisors. The WWII scenes are among the most realistic ever made. The screenwriter was rather harsh on the British Generals, perhaps with good reason. Fans of General Montgomery will not be pleased. The characterisation of German General Modal was overdone, although there is an element of truth to the depiction. The cast includes every well-known male lead of the day. It's unusual to see a big war film that wasn't also a big victory. Good viewing and often quite moving.

Although getting on in years this is an excellent war movie with a star studded cast which is a very realistic portrayal of how things can and did go wrong.

The movie shows ther complexities and extremities of war. It also shows and explaines the the preasures that the heirachy have to contend with. It is a movie or book that should be seen or read by year 10 or 11 students.

Although old this one is still an attention keeping movie, good to see old stars and a story that was thought provoking as it was based on true story!

It is good to see a desire to be more factual than Hollywood-dramatical. Drama is inevitable when a war is happening. So long as the drama has a true history of actually having occurred, then that's o.k. by me. The movie shows the good and bad, the trust and mistrust, the got-it-right and got-it-wrong from both sides. It did not come across as Germans being ALL BAD and the Allies being the predictable super-heroes.

This movie was too BUSY. I could not follow the plot at all. I did find it depicting the futility, the waste and destruction that war brings. It seems that a man's life is worth nothing!
