What our customers are saying

"I would also just like to thank you again for a great service we are thoroughly enjoying. We will certainly be customers for the long term and recommend you guys regularly."
AK - Auldana SA

"Thanks for the excellent service provided by WebFlicks. I couldn't be happier with the highest quality customer relations I have experienced in years! Not to mention a much wider range of movies I have ever seen in any video shop!"
AB - Woolner NT

"I wanted to tell you how pleased I have been with the service. It's great fun to get a package in the mail and also not to have the pressure of returning the movie the following day. DVDs arrived promptly and the emails sent kept me informed as to when a movie would arrive."
KC - Stoneville WA

"Love the service and have told lots of people about the website."
GR - Randwick NSW

"The best thing about WebFlicks is the convenience of having 2 DVDs to watch at the weekend and not having to drive 140kms to pick up and return them. Having the reviews certainly helps when choosing a movie from the great range that you have. We have been telling all our neighbours about your terrific service."
AP - Southern Cross WA

"I really appreciate the service as I am in a wheelchair. Getting around the shelves in a video shop is no fun to us wheelies, nor is going to the cinema so you have made my life a little more pleasant. Thank you!"
MM - Chatswood NSW

"I appreciate your quick response. Great customer service!"
NC - Australind WA

"We are thoroughly enjoying your rental service, especially the extensive range of classic movies not available in mainline rental stores. Surely this must be one of the key benefits of subscribing to WebFlicks, to have access to so many award-winning titles from the earlier film-making years. We have especially enjoyed the large range of Alfred Hitchcock titles you have in catalogue, and the recent additions to these selections."
AN - Highton Vic

What The Press Says

Connect road-tested the [WebFlicks] service for a month and was impressed with the system, which proved surprisingly flexible and punctual. DVDs arrived in the mail on average two days after being ordered online - not bad if you can be organised enough to plan your movie viewing in advance.

Online movie rentals are expected to bring more consumers to the world of internet shopping...

Paul Davis, the chief investment officer at TechInvest... believes retail sites can survive and possibly thrive. "If you already pay for it, and you already buy it, and they can deliver it better, faster, cheaper, then that's a good model - end of story," he says.

Staying home to watch movies has become even easier. You can curl up on the couch without even having to go to the video shop. WebFlicks operates an online digital library of more than 5000 [now more than 7000] DVDs on a subscription basis instead of the pay-as-you-go scheme of video stores.

Renting by mail is certainly an attractive proposition for catalogue releases. And even the biggest video store would struggle to offer the same sort of range as an internet site...

Global Reviews...Operations Manager Brad Smith says it is an intriguing business model. "I think it's an idea that will take off, because it is a natural extension of the club concept," he says. "You can develop a community of users who hit the website on a regular basis. There is a strong base of DVD collectors, but the extension of that are your movie lovers who are happy just to rent."

James Ross, Senior Analyst at internet consultancy AMR Interactive, agrees. "I don't know if it necessarily will prove to be more attractive than online retailing - only time will tell. But the way it has impacted in States in the way products are viewed is very interesting. What people are watching are not the Top 10 blockbusters, but the niche titles. If the concept takes off, it might have a big impact on the distribution models of the studios."

"Online rentals have proved to be a big hit in the US - but will the concept take off in Australia?"

History of WebFlicks

In September 1998 two Melbourne university students launched DVD Rent, the first Australian website to provide a DVD rent-by-mail service. DVD Rent offered DVDs for 7-day rental, as well as a rent-buy scheme and DVD sales. The popular site grew to have a large customer base and needing full time employees to handle logistics and customer service. As time was limited for the two PhD students they closed the site down in order to pursue their research work and write their theses.

In March 2002 WebFlicks bought the DVDRent.com.au domain name and rebuilt the website and back-end logistics system to cater for the growing demand and projected volumes of DVD rentals throughout Australia. July 2002 - The new WebFlicks site opened its virtual doors to the public. Through strategic marketing and business partnerships, WebFlicks continues as the first online DVD rental service for Australian movie-lovers. From offering our customers the choice of 3,000 titles in 2002 we can now offer over 17,000 titles.

The same software designed originally for WebFlicks which was developed by Riversdale is now used for DVD online companies in two continents.

Video Island in the UK launches a similar service using the same superb software and logistics system as WebFlicks (supplied by Riversdale).

DiViDi in Germany launches using the same software platform.

Fatso in New Zealand launches using the same software platform and logistics system as WebFlicks. The WebFlicks DVD catalogue swells to a huge 10,000 titles.

AdultFlix in Australia launches using the same software platform and logistics system.
